A New Day?

Today Democrats in America awaken to a presumptive nominee for President, Barack Obama. I only hope that they don’t have buyer’s remorse in the coming days and months. What with the lack of experience in national campaigns and a media that prefers process to substance the challenges facing Senator Obama are immense.

Can he unite the party after a long primary season? Almost 50% of those who participated in the primary and caucus events voted for his opponent. It was constantly noted here and there that his “people” were looking to put the Clintons out of power, and some even said out of the party, some of his surrogates indulged in blatent sexism and race baiting and more than a few of the blogs were fountains of vitriol and nonsense directed at anyone who dared to challenge him. Ah, but he’s a dreamer, he’s for change, he’s for unity of all Americans.

On the other hand there’s John McCain of Arizona. There’s a choice, huh? A man who’ll essentially continue the policies of the current administation or a man with dreams. The old man in the sea or the man who sees bold.

Will the corporate media screw up the focus of voters yet again? Will the color of a tie, the shine on a pair of shoes or a photo op be foisted on us as the defining moment of campaign 2008? Can we overcome stupid and inane and irrelevent to elect our next President?

We'll see, won't we.
